On 9 October 2024, in India, the Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi approved development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat, being set up by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, to be completed in two phases. It gave in-principle approval for Phase 1B and Phase 2, to be funded through voluntary resources and contributions; the Light House Museum under Phase 1B will be funded by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships. Phase 1A, with more than 60% physical progress, is planned for completion by 2025 and will have an NMHC museum with six galleries, including an Indian Navy and Coast Guard gallery. A separate society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, headed by the Ports Minister, will develop future phases. About 22,000 jobs (15,000 direct and 7,000 indirect) are expected.
