The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on 1 October 2025 approved the opening of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) in the civil sector to meet the needs of the growing number of Central Government employees. The estimated cost is ₹5,862.55 crore over nine years from 2026-27, including ₹2,585.52 crore of capital and ₹3,277.03 crore of operating expenditure. For the first time, these KVs have been sanctioned with Balvatikas, covering three years of the foundational (pre-primary) stage under NEP 2020. There are 1,288 functional KVs, including three abroad in Moscow, Kathmandu and Tehran, with about 13.62 lakh students. The KV scheme was approved in November 1962.
