Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan virtually inaugurated Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited's Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Brahmapuram, Kochi, on 27 February 2026, in the presence of Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi. The plant will process 150 tonnes of source-segregated biodegradable municipal solid waste a day, producing 5.6 tonnes of compressed biogas and 28 tonnes of organic manure daily, and makes Kochi the first city in Kerala to commission such a plant. BPCL Kochi Refinery proposed the plant after the major fire at the Brahmapuram dump site on 2 March 2023 and Kerala High Court directions; the State approved it in November 2023. The Petroleum Ministry is setting up 195 CBG plants across the country, seven of them in Kerala.
