BIS publishes six new standards for priority assistive products

The Bureau of Indian Standards published six new Indian Standards for priority assistive products — elbow crutches, walking sticks, multi-legged walking sticks, portable ramps, tactile guide maps and Braille on signage — under ICMR's National List of Essential Assistive Products, the Consumer Affairs Ministry said on 1 May 2026.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has published six new standards for priority assistive products as part of the National List of Essential Assistive Products (NLEAP) initiative of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the Consumer Affairs Ministry said on 1 May 2026. The standards cover elbow crutches, walking sticks, walking sticks with three or more legs, portable ramps for wheelchair and stroller users, the content and display of tactile guide maps, and the application of Braille on signage, equipment and appliances. They were formulated by the BIS technical committee MHD 09 on assistive products including rehabilitation appliances, orthotic and prosthetic items.
