BCGCL and MCL sign land lease for coal-to-ammonium nitrate project at Lakhanpur, Odisha

Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL) and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) signed a land-leasing agreement on 1 April 2026 in New Delhi, in the presence of Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy, for a coal-to-ammonium nitrate project at Lakhanpur, Odisha. The 2,000 tonnes-per-day ammonium nitrate facility will be India's first coal gasification project to use indigenously developed gasification technology from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). It will be spread over about 350 acres of MCL land, enabled by reforms allowing Coal Bearing Area land to be used for coal gasification.
