The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $230 million loan on 21 August 2026 for the Chennai Climate-Resilient Water Security and Sewerage Project, to modernise and expand Chennai's water supply and sanitation. The project will lay more than 170 km of water and sewer pipes and upgrade seven water pumping stations and 38 sewer pumping stations. Chennai will become the first Indian city to implement a comprehensive ring-main solution, a closed-loop plumbing system that keeps water pressure balanced. The project also brings technology to end hazardous manual sewer inspections.
