27th PM-STIAC meeting discusses cell and gene therapy in India

The 27th meeting of the Prime Minister's Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC) was held on 21 January 2025 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, under the chairmanship of Principal Scientific Adviser Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, to discuss cell and gene therapy (CGT) in India. Prof. Sood said about 70 million people in India have rare diseases, 80% of them genetic, and that the Genome India Project positions India to lead in personalised gene therapies, building on CAR-T cell therapy and gene therapy for haemophilia. NITI Aayog Member (Health) Dr V.K. Paul and secretaries of science departments took part.
