20th International Tipitaka Chanting Ceremony to be held at Bodhgaya, 2â13 December 2025
The Ministry of Culture announced on 16 November 2025 that seventeen Indian Buddhist organisations will, for the first time, jointly organise the 20th International Tipitaka Chanting Ceremony at the Mahabodhi Temple, Bodhgaya, Bihar from 2 to 13 December 2025.
Summary
The International Tipitaka Chanting Ceremony, held annually since 2006, is the largest Theravada Buddhist gathering of its kind and involves collective recitation of the Pali Tipitaka. It has been led for two decades by Wangmo Dixey of the Light of Buddha Dharma Foundation International. Over 15,000 Indian monks and lay people are expected, along with participants from the US, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu will be chief guest at the opening on 2 December, and the event will be followed by a walk from Jethian Valley to Venuvana in Rajgir.
