17th BRICS Summit in Rio ends; Declaration backs India's BRICS Chairship in 2026

On 7 July 2025 in Rio de Janeiro, PM Narendra Modi addressed the BRICS session on 'Environment, COP-30 and Global Health' as the 17th BRICS Summit (6–7 July) concluded, with the Rio de Janeiro Declaration backing India's Chairship in 2026.

Summary

The 17th BRICS Summit was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 6–7 July 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the inaugural session on 'Reform of Global Governance and Peace and Security', a session on 'Strengthening Multilateral, Economic-Financial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence', and, on 7 July, a session on 'Environment, COP-30 and Global Health', where he called climate justice a moral responsibility, cited initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, CDRI and the Global Biofuels Alliance, and welcomed the group's Framework Declaration on Climate Finance. He called the Pahalgam terror attack of April 2025 an attack on all humanity and urged zero tolerance for terrorism. The Rio de Janeiro Declaration welcomed Indonesia as a BRICS member, condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April 2025 in which 26 people were killed, and extended full support to India for its BRICS Chairship in 2026 and the holding of the 18th BRICS Summit in India.
